Gowen Power Systems began in 1969 as a division of Gowen Marine that serviced large generator units on commercial ocean transport vessels calling on Portland Harbor. Over the years it evolved and began servicing the shoreside commercial and residential generator market. In 1975 Gowen became the Maine distributor for Kohler Generators and Allis Charmers Engines and Generators, hence Gowen Power systems was created. This deep experience and technical expertise give the company its unique market presence and unrivalled credibility.
In the 80’s the Kohler Company down sized the number of Distributors in the Northeast and gave Gowen Power Systems the choice of continuing as a distributor or being a full line dealer servicing south Maine. Gowen’s management decided it could better serve its customers by being a full line sales and service dealer because with their depth of experience, their technicians were often called on to service many different brands of generators. Although they remain a Kohler Titanium dealer and specialize in installing and, maintaining Kohler Systems, they retain the expertise to service virtually any brand in existence.
In 2013 the Gowen Marine group was sold, and the Gowen Power Systems group was moved to its current location at 41 Evergreen Dr, in Portland. This move allowed GPS to have faster and better access to the Maine Turnpike and interstate 95 to better serve its customer base.
After almost 50 years in business, Gowen Power has installed thousands of generators throughout Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Company is proud of its reputation for excellent customer service. Our staff are factory trained and the company has an in-house continuing education program to keep up with the ever-changing technology in the back up power sector. The company has both standard and custom-tailored generator maintenance programs that it offers its many customers. The company prides itself in insuring that a live person will always answer its phone, 24/7.
In 2019, Gowen management, recognizing that the company was primed for a new phase of growth, brought a strategic investor to drive its expansion into new markets. This infused new capital investment and fresh energy into the company. While Gowen Power Systems will remain focused on its core business of installing and servicing backup generators, it will broaden its expertise towards integrating them with new technologies in battery and solar. The company’s founder and long-time President remains engaged as a technical consultant and advisor.
